Maybe a dumb question, but why is there an extra column in the first place?

If you're really just making a file chooser, you might be better off using a
prefab file chooser widget. I am not sure if one exists in gwidgets, but
there is a GtkFileChooserWidget in RGtk2 that will likely solve your
problems and give you a lot more functionality for free. I think it's pretty
easy (and it could be made a lot easier) to embed RGtk2 widgets into
gWidgetsRGtk2-based interfaces. Of course, you lose cross-toolkit
compatibility (but it's still cross platform).
