Thanks Simon, all is well. The « someone » must be me. Recently I purchased a 
SSD to put in my Mac. I installed Mavericks on it while it was still an 
external disk, then installed it in my Mac, installed my old HD as a second 
drive (in place of the optical drive), and told OS X that my user account was 
on the second drive. All this may have had unforeseen consequences…
