... you inspect the source code to find out that NEWS was  
lying ;) ... the preference is actually called auto.close.parens as  
it turns out, so in order to disable it you have to paste this in  
Terminal:

defaults write org.R-project.R auto.close.parens NO

This is two bug reports in one e-mail ;). Indeed, the FAQ is out of  
sync with the actual GUI. In fact the preferences did not change from  
the previous version, so this has been around for a while. There are  
now more and differently named tabs. I'll try to clean up both the  
preferences and the FAQ in the near future ...
