I remember this being answered here before - make sure you select some
other color swatch before closing the dialog and all should be well.
It has something to do with when the setting is saved in the
preferences - someone would have to track it down more closely ...

either on google or wikipedia - what "well-known" problem are you
referring to - can you be more specific, please? At the very least
please provide a link to the post you mean...
