thank you. what threw me off was reading in ?quartz that

Calling 'quartz()' sets '.Device' to '"quartz"' for on-scren devices and  
to '"quartz_off_screen"' otherwise.

[note minor typo in "scren"] so I incorrectly thought I had to tinker  
with .Device. (?dev.new left me confused; it was ?options with "/Device"  
that finally got me to understand that all that was required is the  
following:

options(device="quartz").

in my ~/.Rprofile . thanks again.
