Even old R should compile for 64-bit out of the box -- if you set the flags 
correctly. The 64-bit support for OS X is there ever since Tiger. Can you 
supply details? (i.e. how did you try to compile, what did not work etc)

I'm not aware of any because such an old R predates SL ...
