I teach several sections of introductory social science statistics each year.
I have recently started to implement R using the R Commander GUI for use in my
class and will soon integrate it into my classes to replace SPSS as the
statistics package that I teach to students. This is an undergraduate
introductory course so we do not use the command interface in SPSS. The R
Commander is a viable alternative to the SPSS package. For true beginners with
R and R commander I have finished a tutorial paper on getting started and using
the Commander GUI in social science statistics courses. I will be submitting
the paper for publication but would be glad to share copies with interested
colleagues. Email me at the address below and I will email you a copy of the
paper. I am also working on tutorials for Deducer and RKWard which are also
very nice GUI's for the R implementation as it applies to social science
statistics
