All good but the bit about Word. I tried hard to write on OpenOffice and got wupped upside the head repeatedly. Nearly all philosophy publishers, and increasingly many science fiction publishers, just openly require Word documents (and it's BS that OpenOffice opens in Word just fine -- no doubt because Microsoft changes standards to intentionally make it fail). If you wrote in BBEdit you'd spend weeks reformatting your novel in the end so that an agent or editor would read it. He no doubt has editors who humor him because he's Cory Doctorow....
