Alicia, I am so full of envy that I can hardly type.

By sheer coincidence, I had breakfast the day after the Hugos in
Denver last year at the next table from Neil Gaiman. I also decided
not to bother him.

Just so everybody knows, I had to miss Worldcon because I was having
spinal fusion surgery. It's been a rough couple of weeks that I hope
never to go through again. (Weirdest moment: I passed out while they
were removing the staples holding the incision. If you ever want
attention from an entire squadron of nurses I recommend that.) The
surgery itself seems to have gone incredibly well. It's been only two
weeks and today I am actually feeling human again for the first time.
There's still lots more recovery to go - fusion can take 12-18 months
to fully set - but it gives me hope that I'll be able to attend
worldcons in the future, something that didn't seem possible before
since the trip to Denver nearly destroyed me.

And I have some additional good news that I'll put into a separate
post.

Steve
