Oddly enough, no. I'm not making any claims about inventing it; I
certainly picked it up from earlier writers. But I started making an
issue of it because nobody else at the time was saying it. I think
that many writers thought it was somehow diminishing of their work.

It's become more common to acknowledge this over the years, but you
still find a surprising number of people who don't understand what
this means. All those people who think that the purpose of science
fiction is to predict the future don't get it at all.

I bet that if I say this at Astronomicon I'll get a bunch of people
arguing with me. Maybe I'll try to sneak it in. {g}
