Subject: [racebase] Fixed Odds
I saw a report somewhere over the past week where the TAB's bookies were
claiming their reason for keeping Xcellent safe in the Derby (he's in to
$4.50) was that they had a liability of $60,000 on him.
Surely, $60,000 is bugger all.
After I saw him win his maiden first-up I put a lazy $40 on him at $16, so
it seems that I'm responsible for 1% of the TAB's liabilities. Apparently
the horse was backed at $50 and $30-odd before he'd started, was brought in
to $20 immediately after the maiden win, then quickly shortened again to
$16.
If bets were written at $50 they must have been fairly lightweight wagers .
.. . I mean, a thou at that price would account for all of the TAB's risk on
the horse, yet you'd have to imagine there were plenty like myself (and I'd
have guessed more than a hundred) who knew nothing of the horse until he'd
run but were impressed enough to have a tickle.
The only conclusion I can come to is that the TAB's fixed odds operation
must be closer to church fete dimensions than the high-roller outfit it's
cracked up to be.
