Hello Neil

I sure wouldn't back a New Zealand sprinter (not one of the current lot anyway) in something like the Newmarket, the Lightning or the Oakleigh Plate and wins in the Galaxy by Mr Tiz and Doomben Ten Thousand (or was it the Stradbroke?) by Canterbury Belle are disappearing into the mists of time.

But this was a race restricted to fillies and mares, which lowered the bar a fair way. Obviously Alinghi is a talented type, but they can all have an off day, especially on an interstate trip.

GIJ raced where I expected her to be but for a horrible moment when they turned in I thought the jockey was going to try to pick a path through the field. I would have preferred for her to be taken to the outside immediately on straightening and maybe she would have threatened third (there was no way she was going to trouble the first two).

As for the betting, I phoned my mate at about 1.30 our time, and he told me $21 was available on the Queensland fixed odds market, which offers each-way betting (I imagine the place quote would have been $6). He was sure she'd be nearer $30 by post time so I put half the bet on at the 20s each way and half on the tote, with a saver of Alinghi, GIJ, Field in the trifecta.

In the end I've finished up out of pocket . . . but it's not for the first time and won't be the last and I think she was worth the crack.

Hi Gil,

Unfortunately, our top sprinters still can't match the Aussies at Group level ... especially the type that race back in the field. GI JANE was outpaced today. Although we can keep making excuses for her, i.e. traffic problems ... but sadly that's tough if their normal racing pattern is to get back in the running. And she is still relatively inexperienced. Still the odds on offer were definitely worth a bob or two.

EGYPTIAN RAINE springs to mind as an NZ sprinter who did prove successful, but she was an on-pace runner. And I suppose KING'S CHAPEL should get a mention, but he got too far back in his Aussie runs too.

And I can't understand why anyone would want the NZTAB tote odds of $6 on GI JANE, when she remained at $15 on Final Field ... and stretched to $30 on the NSW TAB. The pools need merging ... fast!

Regards

Neil F

Missed again.

I'm thinking of sending Neville Couchman an email telling him to send me a thousand dollars and I'll stop backing her.
