Obviously, I digress.
Where was I? Lee Rutherford, of course. There are lies, damn lies and statistics (Benjamin Disraeli) or, put another way, first get the facts, then you can distort 'em as much as you want (Mark Twain).
I don't care what the stats say on Lee Rutherford, I have a mental picture of her, either in the Ritchies' lime green or the McKees' sky blue, lobbing along in front, horse running kindly on a light rein then kicking clear in the straight while the others are left flat-footed. Then, on return to scale, the best smile in the business . . . something to gladden an old man's heart. I wish I'd seen it yesterday.
In that Auckland Cup, Jock Caddigan had Kotare Chief run two identical miles of, from memory, 1:38 . . . which sort of defines the term "one-paced". David Peake tried similar tactics a couple of years later but came unstuck (although he may have placed or at least earned a stake) and my guess is that it's something that will come off once every 50 years. You and I won't see it again, Muz.
Finally, the metronome. This is an instrument used by teachers of piano. It is placed on the piano and ticks off the tempo the teacher requires. It has become a metaphor for constancy and correctness of timing.
And that's enough to be going on with.
