Te Awamutu jockey Mark Sweeney was badly hurt in a fall at the
Cambridge trials today.
Sweeney's mount, a Stravinsky colt, in a two-year-old catchweight
800m heat crossed the finishing line but then careered towards the
outside of the course and Sweeney was tossed into the outside fence
landing heavily.
He is in Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, with suspected multiple broken
bones in his lower left leg and possible shoulder injuiries.
The trials programme was put back 40 minutes while Sweeney was
assisted from the track into the ambulance.
The injury to Sweeney comes at a time when the jockeys ranks in New
Zealand are very thin. Other senior northern riders such as Vinny
Colgan and Peter Johnson are also currently sidelined with injury.
