While on the subject of old stories, I was at Ellerslie when Royal Cadenza
won the 1977 Auckland Cup ... Bob Skelton up from memory. Anyway my mate
collected $1300 [a tidy sum back then and probably still is!] for a modest
outlay and promptly told just about the whole grandstand of his great
punting feat.

He went to the back of the tote to collect [as you did in those days] and
stuffed the cash in his pocket. Unfortunately one person too many had heard
of his big win and by the time the next race was ready to be invested upon
the total sum had been pickpocketed by someone who needed the money more
than him. We had our suspicions who it might have been but that wasn't a lot
of use.

Sometimes it just pays to keep your mouth shut!
