You're right. Lyell Creek was there for one reason only tonight . . . his
drawing power, especially as the club was up against an important S12 match
at Eden Park.

The ATC would have picked up all the tabs for the Creek team . . . and been
happy to do so as he's probably got an extra 2000-3000 people through the
gate.

But as for him winning . . . he was more a $50 shot than the $5 or $6 on
offer.

I read some Don Scott stuff last year and he touched on commentators as
analysts. He described Ken Howard as one of the best, maybe THE best,
commentator he'd heard but completely dismissed his selecting abilities. One
of the lesser commentators, forget who, he regarded as an expert tipster.
But in Scott's mind there was definitely no correlation between race-calling
and selecting. I agree entirely.

On the odd occasion I've listened to these blokes over the years I've always
been struck by the shallowness of their thinking; sometimes by the sheer
loopiness of it . . . like Simon's Lyell Creek comments.

The two exceptions are Tony Lee, probably because he's a bloodstock agent as
well, and Darren Tyquin, who does seem to have undertaken some research.
Keith Haub was probably the worst . . . as shallow as a petrie dish and far
less productive.
