THURSDAY RACE MEETING ABANDONED
The race meeting scheduled for Riccarton Park Racecourse on Thursday
has been abandoned.
When entries closed at 12 noon today only 77 entries had been
received for the eight race programme and of these 25 were also
entered for the Timaru Racing Club meeting on Sunday.
Difficulties were anticipated in attracting horses to meetings this
June after the Timaru and Otago Racing Clubs swapped dates to enable
a race meeting to be held in Dunedin on the day of the Lions versus
Otago Rugby match. This put only three days between the two
Canterbury region meetings. Eight races were scheduled at each of the
three meetings to minimise the impact, however prevailing wet weather
in Christchurch and continuing heavy track conditions have compounded
the position and seen the majority of horses target the better going
at Phar Lap Raceway.
Nominations remain open for the Timaru Racing Club meeting until
10:00 am tomorrow to enable horses entered for Riccarton Park to be
entered for that meeting.
The $35,000 NZISS bonus has been transferred to the Progressive 1600
metre race at Timaru and Cambridge Lodge is to be applauded for this
move.
The $15,000 NZISS bonus on the two-year-old race has been transferred
to the Otago Racing Club meeting on 18 June.
In an ironic twist the weather has also played havoc with the
Wingatui track and the Otago Racing Club meeting on 18 June has been
transferred to Oamaru.
