If you wish to work with The Schemer's Guide, use Intermediate Plus Lambda and 
remember to say 

 (define (afunction x)
   (local ((define y (* x x))
           (define z (+ y 10)))
     (expt y z)))

instead of 

 (define (afunction x)
   (define y (* x x))
   (define z (+ y 10))
   (expt y z)))
