I think it's an improvement over the magnifying glass, but you might want something other than *only* a green checkmark in the icon. In GUIs in general, I think a green checkmark means "yes", like a red `X' means "no". You'll even see them sometimes as part of the stock "OK" and "Cancel" buttons in GUI toolkits/themes.
