The Ubuntu/Debian builds are self-installing shell scripts and shouldn't rely on dpkg/apt, so you may want to try one of those in case they work for your distro. Otherwise, I suggest the "Unix source + built packages" option. Just extract the tarball and read "src/README" for directions.
