Thank you Alex, George, and Matthew for the diagnosis and excellent suggestions! The explanations around Windows handles and GC make perfect sense, even though it's been literally decades since I've done any direct work with Windows' graphics subsystem. I totally missed the fact that the list-box% control supports multiple columns, which makes it a much more reasonable starting point for this job.
