Since I had to look up this thread again, I wanted to mention that there is a way to avoid downloading readline-gpl. By default, the repl uses editline, which also has a way of switching on vi (or emacs) modes. Just edit/create the ~/.editrc file:
bind -v bind "jj" vi-command-mode and you have vi-mode with jj letting you escape into command mode.
