On my site, I've written my own text filter that replaces textile
image references with links to the image, so that:

!image.jpg!

would get replaced with

!/attachments/monkey.jpg!

before getting handed off to textile for regular processing.

Look at:

It also filters out a bunch of common characters from people cutting/pasting 
from word, the key bit is a page.attachments.each
