Storing attachments in the DB be useful for:
        - scaling horizontally (in a multi-server master/slave db environment).
        - backing up/copy the site requires only a single db copy.
        - can set up a hot backup server as a mysql slave.

The last is probably the most useful to my mind (mainly because I use my server
for other things and occasionally need to (or
accidentally) take it off the air).

Dan.
