I've run across that before with other setups and it has nothing to do with
radiant. So good news it's not a radiant problem, bad news is that doesn't
solve your problem.

As for RVM I strongly suggest using it on a development machine.. The last
time I set it up I took some notes on the process. I've pasted them below.

rvm requires curl so lets install it, and ruby/rails requires a bunch of
stuff so lets make sure it's all installed

sudo apt-get -y curl install build-essential sqlite3 libsqlite3-dev
imagemagick libmagick9-dev git-core mysql-server mysql-admin
libmysqlclient-dev zlib-bin libssl-dev libncurses5-dev libreadline5

and now install rvm

bash < < (curl -s  https://rvm.beginrescueend.com/install/rvm)

edit .bash.rc and change at top

#[ -z "$PS1" ] && return

if [[ -n "$PS1" ]] ; then

at bottom add

  if [ -f ~/.rvmprompt ]; then

    . ~/.rvmprompt

  fi

fi

[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" # Load
RVM into a shell session *as a function*

Save the following between the === as ~/.rvmprompt

Note this part isn't necissary it just changes your command prompt to show
what ruby and gemset you are at.

chmod +x .rvmprompt

rvm install 1.8.7

You also might need to do a gem update --system

Now to install radiant.

rvm use 1.8.7
rvm gemset create radiant
rvm use @radiant
gem install radiant --pre

now to activate the radiant gemset when ever you need to just do a rvm use
1.8.7@radiant
