That depends on your tcp/ip stacks, modem, NAS, routers on the 
path to each individual destination host, etc..... 1500 often
works well, which is why it's commonly used as a default. I think
most routers are capable of forwarding 1500-octet packets without
fragmenting them. The only other reason I can see for using an MTU
less than that is if there is heavy packet loss (as it lowers the 
amount of bytes that must be retransmitted).

Last time I tried experimenting with setting MTU for modem 
connections, nothing I tried worked as well as leaving it alone :-)
