My usual suggestion in this situation is to spend some extra money on the SQL
host and equip it with dual ethernet cards and a solid RAID array.

On what platform? If Linux, I have found the Sybase drivers work well, if
FreeBSD use DBD-Proxy, if NT use DBD-ODBC.
