We have had reports of problems with Perl 5.8 so I suggest you use Perl 5.6.1 instead.

This would appear to be a problem with DBD-ODBC - have you tried a different version?
And what ODBC driver are you using?
What hardware/software platform are you running on and what version of Perl?
