_Polls vs. Reality_
(http://blogs.kqed.org/prop8/2010/07/20/polls-vs-reality/)
You could excuse supporters of gay marriage for doing a double take at the
findings of a _just-released Field Poll_
(http://field.com/fieldpollonline/subscribers/Rls2349.pdf) . The survey shows
51% of registered voters ( in
California ) supporting same sex unions and 42% opposed. 7% had no opinion.
Those are the exact same numbers Field found in _May of 2008 _
(http://field.com/fieldpollonline/subscribers/Rls2268.pdf) ... a  few months
before voters
banned same sex marriage by _passing Prop. 8 52-48%_
(http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-2008election-california-results,0,3304898.htmlstory)
 .

Why ? The poll did not differentiate likely voters from generalized
public opinion.
Everyone has opinions, but not everyone votes.
