CNSNEWS.com Facebook Joins With GLAAD To Remove Anti-Gay Comments From Site; But Still Features 'I Hate the Pope,' 'I Hate Conservatives,' and 'I Hate Democrats' Pages Monday, October 25, 2010 By _Eric Scheiner_ (http://www.cnsnews.com/source/75077) (CNSNews.com) - Facebook announced on October 19th, that it’s working with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to prevent and remove what it considers anti-gay comments from its social website. However, Facebook still includes pages with such names as "I Hate the Pope," "I Hate Conservatives," and "I Hate Democrats." (http://www.cnsnews.com/image/48516) According to Facebook’s_ Network Of Support_ (http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=161164070571050&id=125459124158601&ref=mf) page: ”Facebook is committed to fostering a safe and trusted environment that gives people the freedom to express their opinions and viewpoints. But sometimes, just like in the offline world, people can say offensive or even hateful things online. Hateful comments violate Facebook’s policies, and if they are ever posted, people on Facebook are quick to report them and we are quick to respond.” “In light of recent tragedies involving youth who have taken their own lives as a result of anti-LGBT bullying, we felt it necessary to form a “ Network of Support” to help us effectively address issues faced by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.” Facebook’s ‘_Statement of Rights and Responsibilities_ (http://www.facebook.com/terms.php) ’ already bars content that is hateful, threatening or pornographic. A search of the site however, finds that certain types of hateful language and communities are tolerated.
