For now all that I have to go on is the NRO article. But since
National Review is reputable I must assume that this "fact" is
exactly that. You may be completely correct, that private
giving to charity by employees was and is commonplace.
But from what I can tell --again, to refer to the article--
corporate giving has been nil.

Maybe I should also be aghast at NRO's position,
"so what if there is no spirit of philanthropy at the company ?"
That attitude is callous in the extreme and stands in dramatic contrast
to Bill Gates who now is giving literally billions to worthy causes
around the world.

Or think about someone with a reputation for hard-heartedness
while he headed his corporation, Andrew Carnegie. At the end
he gave away, smartly, with deliberation, carefully as investments
in society, a huge fortune. There now are Carnegie libraries and
an endowment and institutions of various kinds all over the country.

You can always say that had Steve Jobs lived maybe he would
have changed the policy. That is possible. But what we have
is what he actually did --or did not do-- and therein lies the tale.

Sometimes life does not give second chances. The lesson is obvious :
Do what you can , that lives up to your ideals, while it is can be done.
Make it perfect later. In the meantime, imperfect as it may be,
make it real.

Let me simply say that the fact that Apple never advertised charitable
giving doesn't mean we didn't give any.

Apple lived by old-fashioned rules. We talked about our products.
Everything else stayed in the family.
