Ernie :
May I ask what philosopher you have been reading ?
OK, the pre-Socratics didn't do much research. But before Socrates
there wasn't all that much TO research.

But ever since then research has been intrinsic to most philosophy, if not
all philosophy.

I once did a study of Socrates' references to his teacher, the priestess
Diotima.
Not sure if this is pure research, but he sure in heck was her student at
one time,
learning all the lessons she could teach him, and that set of experiences
provided
Socrates with a lifelong "textbook" to refer to, through many years to
come.

Maybe more relevant, Thomas Aquinas refers to other philosophers he had
studied
in just about everything he wrote. But this is true for Hegel and Nietzsche
 and
many others.

Well, there have been scores of philosophers. While at one time I did try
to
read them all , these days I focus on just those that are most important to
 me.
And those all refer to other thinkers who they have read carefully and
thought about deeply.

So, the question again is, which philosophers are you referring to ?

Philosophers :-)

Of course, you could make the counter-arwgument they aren't actually
responsible for doing anything...
