The similarities are that both are based on "ends", rather than
principles, and I think there's a significant philosophical overlap
between the two.  Though, while utilitarians set the end goal at
maximum happiness across a populace, I don't think true fulfillment
will be achieved by that end alone.  Rather, there's something to be
said about a productive society that promotes those things (education,
technological advance, intellectual inquiry, and science) that make us
better and more productive; permanent fulfillment at the expense of
some temporary happiness.
