There is an interesting difference in perspective here. The author (and I, for 
that matter) are ultimately more concerned about the kingdom of God than the 
physical world. Yes, we work for a just and free society as one way to reveal 
the Kingdom of God. But if that fails and we are persecuted, we will use -that- 
as simply another way to reveal the Kingdom. As Bonhoeffer did under the Nazis, 
and many Chinese do today. 

Persecution isn't our first choice about how to reveal God's Kingship-- but it 
might be God's.
