I think the big takeaway is that *moral authority* is prior to *political 
authority*.

In the U.S., that started with Scripture and Christianity.  In our postmodern 
age, it may come down to a sort of "shared deism" and personal authenticity.  
But I don't think we can either revert back to the culture of the Founders (as 
the Right wants) or ignore the issue entirely (as the Left wants).
