One of the nation's oldest organizations founded to protect and defend
blacks during the civil rights era has become one of the leading advocates for
homosexual rights and is promoting "mix it up" day in over 2,400 public
and private schools on Oct. 30.
The Southern Poverty Law Center began the program in 2002 as a way to
encourage children to break through racial barriers and accept different lifes
tyles, including homosexuality.
According to the group's website, "SPLC is a nonprofit civil rights
organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry. Founded in 1971, SPLC is
known for investigating and exposing hate group activities throughout the
world. They focus on widespread issues of social injustice including children
at
risk, hate and extremism, immigrant justice, and LGBT rights. But they go
a step beyond fighting hate and seeking justice for the vulnerable. The
SPLC conducts one of the nation's leading programs for teaching tolerance."
Initially designed as a "Teaching Tolerance" program, the organization
claims they are reaching hundreds of thousands of student annually about not
only the civil rights movement, but what they term the "struggle for social
justice," often associated with the legalization of same-sex marriage and
other activities of the pro-homosexual movement.
Elementary and junior high schools are the ones mostly targeted by SPLC.
Although nothing is taught in the classroom, SPLC is using school lunch
periods to promote the ten-year- old program. "So on one day – October 30 this
school year – we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and
connect with someone new over lunch. It's a simple act with profound
implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help
reduce
prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them,
biases and misperceptions can fall away."

However, groups such as the American Family Association are warning parents
to check and see if their children's school is on the list. According to
SPLC, there are over 2,418 schools worldwide that are on the list, including
some Catholic schools such as St. Dominic School for Boys in Memphis,
Tenn.

AFA is encouraging parents to contact their schools to confirm if they are
participating in the program, and if so, protest the school's participation
by voicing concern to administrators and elected school board members. But
if those efforts fall short, they also encourage parents to keep their
children out of school that day.
"AFA is joining other family-oriented groups in urging parents to keep
their children at home that day if their local school is sponsoring the 'Mix
It
Up' project," reads a statement on the association's website. "The
Southern Poverty Law Center is using this project to bully-push its gay
agenda,
and at the same time, intimidate and silence students who have a Biblical
view of homosexuality."
SPLC, which has become known for their "Hate list," has included AFA, along
with the Family Research Council and others on the list. SPLC has the
following statement about AFA and its founder, Don Wildmon, on its website:
"Wildmon has never made a secret of his anti-LGBT views. One of his
statements on the AFA's website reads, 'I never dreamed I would see the day
when
sodomy would be called normal, and those who held to traditional values
based on Christian teaching would be called bigots.' According to the AFA, the
primary goal of the 'homosexual movement' is to 'abolish the traditional,
Judeo-Christian view of human sexuality, marriage, and family.'"
