Just ‘youthful nihilism’

“The whole narrative confirms that while the radical motivations of the
Tsarnaev brothers — and perhaps, it remains to be seen, some of their training
— came from international jihadist movements, the bombing was also the
product of family dysfunction, youthful nihilism, and a pattern of low-level
crimes escalating into a very major one.” — Boston Globe editorial May 3.
Dear Officer Krupke — of “West Side Story” fame — please call your
office. Clearly these boys just have a social disease, so take ’em to a social

worker.
It takes a lot for our competitors on Morrissey Boulevard to really get
under our skin, but this one just sent us over the edge.

Notice the skepticism about whether the Brothers Tsarnaev were trained by
international jihadists — “perhaps,” “it remains to be seen.” But the
utter certainty that these two were the product of a dysfunctional family and
“
youthful nihilism.” If that’s all it takes to place a backpack with a bomb
at the feet of an 8-year-old child and calmly walk away, then this nation
is in one heap of trouble.
Well, the ink was hardly dry on the Globe’s latest rantings when U.S. Rep.
William Keating confirmed to the Herald that Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been
linked to a notorious Canadian jihadist who when questioned by the Russians
(and we imagine their interrogations don’t include Miranda warnings) gave him
up.
William Plotnikov, 23, an ethnic Russian lived in Toronto, converted to
Islam in 2009 and returned to Russia to fight for the Islamist cause,
vanishing there for a time until Russian authorities caught up with him. That,
Keating said, is what spurred the Russians to pass along the information on
Tsarnaev.
“It wasn’t simply a warning to the U.S. They wanted information,” he
added.
Plotnikov and fellow jihadist Mansur Mukhamed Nidal were killed in police
raids last summer and Tsarnaev fled, reportedly leaving behind the new
Russian passport that was the reason for his trip.
“Tamerlan at least had contact with the violent insurgency,” Keating
confirmed.
So from January to July of 2012 Tsarnaev spent quality time with at least
two jihadists and hung out in the belly of the insurgency beast in Chechnya
and Dagestan. But what’s that compared to the influence of his shoplifting
mother and his “youthful nihilism?” Right!
