Secessionist movements are all the rage these days. A_ handful of counties
in Colorado tried to secede from the rest of the state earlier this year_
(http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_24461077/11-counties-weigh-secessi
on-from-colorado-formation-51st) . There's an attempt to _create the
State of Jefferson_
(http://www.kpbs.org/news/2013/oct/28/renewed-effort-state-jefferson/)
(northern California/southern Oregon) via ballot initiative in
2014. _And there's plenty more_
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2013/11/05/11-places-besides-north-colorado-where-activists-want-to-sec
ede-from-their-state/) .
What would the U.S. look like if all of the secession movements in U.S.
history had succeeded? Well, Mansfield University geography professor Andrew
Shears built a map to answer that question. (It covers secession movements
through the end of 2011.) His _124 states of America is below_
(http://andrewshears.com/2011/12/08/the-united-states-that-couldve-been/) .
