But really, has any of our Presidents since Eisenhower deeply understood any of the wars we fought? Reagan might have, but that was probably good intuition and luck more than deep study. The reality is that modern politics and journalism is not merely shallow, but fundamentally disconnected from the real world. Even those who understand the threat of Islam are mostly clueless about how to sway public opinion. Obama's folly is a symptom of a deeper malaise in the body politic. It may feel good, but vilifying him without tackling the root cause will just lead to us getting an equally clueless right-wing bozo. Because yes, things could get very much worse...
