Good stuff, yes, but the way I look at it, their project suffers from
anemia.
"Why can't we all just get along?" and "let's meet in the mushy middle"
is hardly inspirational.

Well, I can hardly criticize their sentiments. But they don't seem to have
given the problems they are trying to solve really serious thought.

For example, who is their great model of what this should look like?
For us there are several possibilities, each one of them capable
of stirring emotions, TR, Madison, Ben Franklin, Eisenhower, etc.
But I cannot think of who Lieberman and Huntsman regard as
a hero.

And what about those vexing problems that seem to defy solution?
Take immigration, how does a middle-of-the-road "solution"
actually solve anything? Immigration, by its nature -given
political realities, not to mention the practicalities involved-
requires some sort of new (bold, radical) solution that
cuts through the R vs L impasse. What Lieberman and
Huntsman seem to offer is triangulation to a center
that no-one really wants, neither on the Right
nor on the Left. We need something different.

This is, in Michael Lind or Ted Halstead's lexicon,
some kind of "thinking outside the box" approach.
Moderates don't seem to have the necessary imagination
to go there, instead their habitual advice is "compromise."

We aren't anti-compromise on principle, but generally it is a
last resort, not the first thing we reflexively turn to.

I am very heartened that two "name" political figures are
looking to the center to find solutions to political problems.
That's why I sent the article. But I think our little group
offers far better ideas.

Yeah, great stuff. They've been around a while and didn't seem to have
much impact. But this might be their moment. Worth thinking if we should find
a way to work with them...
