Fascinating idea. All is not well, I subtracted one question from
the list that reflected a political correctness view of the holiday,
and it should be no problem to think of many other questions
to ask, but the idea has great promise. How could this concept
be developed for RC purposes?

THE HAMPSHIRE PHILOSOPHY AND CHRISTMAS QUIZ

December 10, 2015

The Hampshire Philosophy Society met on Monday 7th December 2015 for a
festive philosophy quiz! Careful planning by the Hampshire Committee in their
meeting on the Tuesday beforehand meant that the excitement had been
building. Walking into Tithe Barn lit a smile on everyone’s faces: the sight
of
Christmas jumpers, sounds of festive music and the feeling of seasonal
good-cheer was infectious. The event looked promising right from the very
start…

A crossword was given to each of the teams, to be completed throughout the
entirety of the rounds and handed in at the end. Questions ranged from
what Mr. Clark studied at University and who Miss Carter’s most detested
philosopher is, to what was discussed at the previous Hampshire Society
gathering, the Moral Limits of Markets. Teams were working hard right from the
very
start, trying to get ahead with the crosswords as well as propose the most
amusing team name.

The first set of questions was a general religious knowledge round. We
tackled such trivia as “What is the meaning of ‘Amen’?” and “What is the
Decalogue?” It was a tricky start, but with mixed-year teams, individuals
from all year groups were given a chance to shine with point-scoring
contributions.

The second round was a picture round called ‘Guess the Philosopher’. The
famous philosophers had a Christmas twist, all of them wearing either
reindeer antlers, Santa hats or even red noses! This round was challenging but
great fun!

The third round was the Christmas Round which was perhaps a little more
fitting to the occasion! Examples of questions included 'In which gospel did
the annunciation of the shepherds occur?'...

Finally, the fourth round was the Christmas Music round – quite possibly
the most eagerly anticipated of them all (not to mention the most
competitive!). This round was tackled especially equally by all the years,
everyone
showing enthusiasm for the much loved Christmas anthems. Little snippets of
the well-known songs were played briefly, not giving away too much, before
each team had to guess the song title – most finding it particularly hard
to refrain from shouting the answer!

The Hampshire Society Christmas Quiz was an exciting, ever seasonal event,
won by “Jumping Elves Sat Upon Santa” who were all rewarded with
chocolate coins but more importantly perhaps, a Hampshire Society pen!
Everyone
left having had a good time, returning back to house singing catchy Christmas
songs with minds full of new knowledge. All in all it was a true success.
We look forward to the return of Hampshire in January!
