Ernie: Not exactly what I was thinking. I must confess that I have grown weary of
calls to action for the unwashed. Not that there aren't times when mobilizing the multitudes isn't a good idea; sometimes that is a very good idea. But it is sorta like call-in shows on radio or talk TV, you get a plethora of comments by people who are ignorant of even the basics and you need to spend time educating the public to the ABCs of the topic. Then what? Unless it is something simple and direct there still is no action. I was thinking more along the lines of one of the Supreme Court Justices of years ago, the 1970s, who wrote a "proposal" which he then circulated to his well connected friends who, anon, took the advice and in a few years funded a variety of conservative think tanks. You can debate the value of these think tanks, for one I believe there should have been more focus and more educational programs, but what that did was to kick start the conservative movement that led to the success of Reagan and the at least temporary eclipse of the GOP old guard establishment. Someone, or some few people, did something similar with the origins of the New America Foundation back in the 1990s. I also could offer a critique of New America but at a minimum it has done a lot of good even if it also should have been more focused and more educational. Here, for all of my pro-populist views and your generally un-populist views, I am more un-populist and you are the populist. I just don't have much enthusiasm for 'crowd sourced' political causes. Instead, I favor a leadership model which starts with thought-out good ideas and a real world budget that amounts to something. To me that is the best way to proceed, by far. And, of course, use any contacts you have to create a cadre of smart and engaged people. About which, needless to say, you are loathe to operate in any such way. All I can say is that should my ship come in some day that is exactly how I would operate from day #1 of having actual resources at my disposal: Create a team, and get moving. Which, of course, was exactly what I did back in those few weeks when it seemed as if the Bugle would get off the ground and I set out to recruit the best people I could find to start the publication. Not exactly my fault that the rug was pulled out within a couple of weeks of this false dawn. Anyway, this is also about my at least indirect offering of my services to anyone interested. What has also been my experience in the past is that when I do suggest an irresistible idea someone with capital likes the idea, then hires someone else who doesn't really know all that much or who has a milquetoast approach and fumbles the ball and the good idea goes nowhere. The task, in other words, is to recruit talent and leadership before all else. For all of my personal limitations, about some matters I feel confident that I have both. For all the good it does me...
