Ernie: Wrong question? I don't think so. Some people have benefited greatly,
starting with Newt Gingrich. Someone else has benefited even if he is local, is Dan Bryant, pastor at the "Christian" (Disciples) church in Eugene, which is the 'liberal' Cathedral hereabouts with its "all faiths" programs that are welcoming to Muslims. I have been shafted royally by Rev Bryant and there is no question about it at all. Homosexuals have benefited greatly, and isn't this obvious? They don't have to answer to anything that matters and just about all the opposition they need to deal with is by Evangelicals who are just about totally incompetent as critics of homosexuality. Conversely, think about where we should be as Radical Centrists if I was successful as an author. Other questions, sure. In fact, when I wrote that comment I had the thought that something was missing. Something else was a factor. So, any ideas about what this might be would be fine with me. Ernie, the impression I get, and it does come across this way even if this is unfair to you, is that you have close to zero comprehension that politics is anything but what appears on the evening news, or out in the open more generally, as at elections, conferences, and public speeches. For me, while no-one should ever overlook the "in the open" part of politics, that is far less important than all the stuff you never see in the open, that never makes the news. That is, in effect, most politics is "smoke filled room" in character, secret deals, secret plans, secret agendas, and agreements to destroy some people and "puff" other people. Politics is criminal in character, in other words, or at the least it is largely amoral. Except when it isn't, when it is populist, or genuinely democratic. But if you don't "get" the unethical dimension of politics, which can be very nasty and, as I just said, can be criminal in nature, you simply don't get politics. Still the wrong question. Maybe some time we should try to figure out the right question...
