Ernie:

Pinker? Now, that is news. If we could interest him in RC that would

definitely be a major plus. Not that he can't be criticized, and I have

criticized him in the past, but he is smart as hell and an academic

celebrity. Who know what may be possible?

About the phrase "Radical Centrism," methinks you take marketing too seriously.

Understandable, of course. But RC is a Cause, not a product that has a

limited shelf life and then we move on to the next widget.

Sort of like "populism," although the comparison is imperfect. But it doesn't
matter

if the word populism is popular one year and not popular the next. It is part

of the political system, forever, and has its own importance regardless

of ups and downs in public opinion.

There's also name recognition. Granted, we need more name recognition,

but we do have some, and it would be crazy to throw it away because

of marketing concerns. You know, Coke sales are a little flat this year,

let's solve the problem by rebranding and start to call it Zippy Cola.

Uhhh, what happens to the part "Coke" plays in American culture,

to consumer confidence in the beverage even when tastes may shift,

and to all the economic good will that Coca Cola has everywhere?

Sometimes marketing considerations are dysfunctional and need to be set aside.

Americans must choose the middle path, away from the fundamentalist positions
on both the right and the left, argues a Washington think tank.

Paul Ratner
22 December, 2018

  * Niskanen Center, a Washington think tank, argues for avoiding the
extremes of political positions.
  * The analysts propose that both a regulated free market and bolstered
social insurance programs are important.
  * If we don't correct course soon, the American political system may never
recover, warn the authors.

Strange Maps

  * Our world maps lie to us: North America and Europe aren't really that big
and Africa really is much bigger.
  * It's all the fault of Mercator: even if the man himself wasn't
necessarily Eurocentric, his projection is.
  * This interactive map tool reveals countries' true sizes without having to
resort to the Peters projection.

  * American childhood is going, going… gone, says Professor Jonathan Haidt.
  * In the mid-'90s there was a sharp shift to overprotective parenting. In
previous generations, kids were allowed to out of the house unsupervised from
age 5-8, which has now become age 12-16. As a result, their independence,
resilience, and problem-solving skills suffer.
  * "Give childhood back to kids so that they do what they most need to do,
which is develop the skills of being an independent adult. Remember that the
job of a parent is to work him or herself out of a job."
  * As a resource for parents, Jonathan Haidt recommends

  * The American healthcare and education systems are known to need some
work, but a new study suggests we've fallen far in comparison to the rest of
the world.
  * The findings show what progress, if any, 195 countries have made over the
last twenty years
  * The study suggests that economic growth is tied to human capital, which
gives a dire view of America's economic prospects.

  * Christmas is an all consuming holiday, celebrated even in cultures where
Christianity never took root.
  * However, some people just can't take it anymore. Some of them even
invented new holidays as alternatives.
