There is such a thing as Left-wing pietism.
Here in Eugene the reaction of the Religious Left, under leadership of Rev Dan Bryant, was sorrowful resignation to the events of 9/11. I could not believe it. Absolutely the worst possible reaction to 9/11 was the only thinkable reaction as far as the Religious Left was concerned. Thousands of innocent people were killed, America had been attacked by fanatic followers of Islam, and bleeding heart so-called Christians could only think of how sad it all was??? Someone punches your wife on the mouth and she is injured. And your reaction is to cry about it? WTH? What about hitting back with everything you've got? It isn't only the pietism of the Religious Right that is morbid and a huge misunderstanding of Christian faith, the pietism of the Religious Left is just as bad if not worse.
