Chris: In that case it was the "snowball Earth" theory. It took decades to be fully accepted
after the idea was first outlined. There was plenty of evidence but nobody wanted to believe it, the concept seemed too far fetched. From what I have learned there is so much more evidence now that nobody can deny it. Another theory that was met with disbelief at the outset was continental drift. That idea was disbelieved for about 50 years before no-one could deny the reality any more. The final confirmation came when astronauts in space measured the rate of drift from the ISS. Turns out that it is on the order of, I think, about 3 inches per year, or was it 3 cms? Anyway, no big deal from year to year, but it makes a difference when you think about thousands of years or more. There are those sea turtles that migrate several thousand miles each year in the Atlantic. Why? The thinking is that their nesting island once was really close to land, waaaay back when. As time progressed over the ages that island got further and further away and the turtles adapted. Not that I know very much on the subject but I kind of like geology. I can see how a geologist would approach new ideas that way. Something interesting might be buried in the next strata, road cut, or drill core.
