These look like they'd be fun to play with. Looks like a version on a through-hole board is available for under $20.

For only US $12,88 you get a fully functional 1 Watt transceiver working on either VHF or UHF." He's got pictures and pointers from a project that uses an Arduino to control the transceiver module. The module is small and cheap enough to embed with an Arduino or RPi. It will be interesting if/when PD0AC gets his hands on one of these modules.
