I am going to make the battery myself. They're just 8 NiMh AA cells.
Must fit perfectly inside two holders that 4 cells each, and that are
glued together.

Alternatively bind 8 together using shrink tube.

All cells should be connected together in series, so as to add up their
individual voltages: 8 x 1.2 V = 9.6 V

The Radio's connector will reveal it's correct polarity because it's
supposed to charge the battery. So it will have a measurable voltage on
the pins (as long as the Radio is connected to the mains).

The positive (+) pin of the Radio must be connected to the positive(+)
terminal of the battery pack, the negaive to the negative.

Guess we blow our warranties and will be cursed forever, but
considering the price of the retail battery we have be either rich or
smart :-)
