"Customise Controller" is intended to work for all device not just the controller and should have been renamed. I definately changed it so I suspect what has happened is that the old description strings have been reused. (Edit: looking at it some of the string have been updated but not the title...)
It does check for the correct screensize of the image and should show them on the settings page next to any image you give it telling you which types of player will be able to use the image. Note that to get the images onto the player/controller you need to have them attached to the SBS not mysqueezebox.com and then go to the settings, screen, wallpaper page.
