I genuinely think it's more significant than that. Companies routinely go out of business. Studies have shown that company size is very weakly correlated with likelihood of going out of business (de Guilmi, C; Gallegati, M.; 2004, Physica A, Vol 334, pp.267-273). Companies routinely exploit lock-in in various ways not to the advantage of customers.
